IXL assigns work by grade level
IXL is a good drill tool, but it assigns practice based on your child's grade — not what they actually know. If your 3rd grader has 1st-grade gaps or 5th-grade strengths, IXL doesn't adjust. IXL has no learn-to-read program, no teaching sequences, and no prerequisite fallback. If your child fails fractions, IXL just drills more fractions. Lumastery checks if they understand equal groups first.
Khan Academy is free, but you're the tracking system
Khan is excellent for self-motivated older kids, and Khanmigo adds AI tutoring for $4/mo. But for homeschool parents managing multiple children, there's still no multi-child dashboard, no weekly parent report, no prerequisite-enforced progression, and no way to verify skills are sticking over time. Most competing platforms charge per child, which is exactly why we didn't. The free plan covers one child.
How do I actually know my child is on track?
Three ways, and they reinforce each other. First, the starting path: Pre-K shows progress inside protected early learning, while Kindergarten and up uses placement to measure the child's actual level. Second, mastery — and, on Family, the weekly emailed report — show what is learned, in progress, and next. Third — the part most platforms skip — we verify the content itself: every lesson and question is re-solved by a reviewer before it reaches your child. What if my child is ahead or behind grade level?
That's exactly what Lumastery is built for. Once a child is on the Kindergarten+ path, placement and daily performance determine the level rather than age alone. A 6-year-old doing 3rd-grade math and a 9-year-old working on 1st-grade gaps can both get the work they need. Pre-K remains intentionally protected until the parent chooses that transition.
How is the free tier different from Family?
Free gives you one child and one daily path: the full protected Pre-K experience when selected, or the adaptive Kindergarten+ curriculum. It's enough to see how your child responds. Family unlocks up to 4 kids, unlimited daily practice, weekly progress reports emailed to you, spaced review, and the ability to choose traditional or conceptual math teaching per child.
What's the 'Founding Family' price?
$19.99/month, or $199/year — about two months free if you pay annually. That's the founding rate, and once you have it, it's locked in forever: when we raise prices for new customers later, yours never changes. We're still in beta, so you cannot buy Family today. You can start free today with no credit card and cancel by deleting the account any time. When Family billing opens, paid plans will include a 14-day trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Nothing is charged today because checkout is not live.
My kids are very different ages. Does that actually work?
It's the main reason this exists. A parent with a Pre-K'er and a 6th grader can manage both from one dashboard. The younger child stays in a protected Pre-K path; the older child follows placement-based work. Each keeps separate progress, and eligible plans include weekly reports.
